Welcome back to yet another Flashback Friday folks where this time we take a look at what happened in the sporting world on October 28th over all the years gone by that are on record.

But this week it’s all about October 28th, so shall we see what wonderful and varied sporting history happened on this day? Oh, go on then…
Flashback Friday: October 28th
1890
Oh boy, this is the oldest piece of sporting history we’ve had yet in a Flashback Friday feature, and it happened on this very day, October 28th, over 130 years ago. One of the very first World Championship Baseball Series on record took place at Washington Park, New York. It was played between the Louisville Colonels and the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, and it was the Colonels who won Game 7 6-2; however, this surprisingly ended the series 3-3-1, and a deciding game was never played so either they shared the championship, or we’re still waiting for them to play it which is unlikely at best.
1951
In 1951 Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina won his first of five Formula 1 Drivers Championship. He went on to hold the record of the most wins for 46 years until a certain Michael Schumacher broke his record.
1984
On October 28th, 1984, Norwegian long-distance runner Grete Waitz won the 14th NYC Women’s Marathon in a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 30 seconds. In her career, Waitz claimed nine NYC Marathon titles and also claimed a World Championship gold in 1983 and five golds at the World Cross Country, setting four world records in the process.
1995
In 1995 on October 28th, England came so close to winning the Rugby League World Cup but fell short after an impressive defensive display by Australia. England went on to get beaten 16-8 by their rivals from down under. It was the 11th edition of the tournament since it first began.

2012
In the tennis world, American tennis goddess Serena Williams won her 3rd season ending tennis title in October 28t. She managed it by beating Russian tennis ace Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6–4, 6–3 in the WTA Championship decider in Istanbul, Turkey. Serena, who announced plans to retire in September, collected a total of 32 Major titles in her long career. She won 17 in singles, 13 in women’s doubles, and 2 in mixed doubles.
2018
British Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finishes 4th in the Mexican Grand Prix at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez to clinch his 5th Formula 1 World Drivers Championship. Since then, it has been a bit of a rocky time for Lewis though having been robbed of a world title last season in the final race and having an underperforming car this season that didn’t allow him to compete at the top to add another world title to his collection. Always next season though Lewis, don’t worry.
