Hot on the heels of the US Open and Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour heads to Detroit Golf Club, Michigan, for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Although the tournament does not feature all the elite players, it still has some great names that will bring serious competition for the $8.8 million purse. Eight of the top 30 in the Official World Ranking will be on the list of the 156 golfers competing at the Detroit Golf Club.
Last year’s winner Tony Finau will aim to defend his title. He will have to fight off with Justin Thomas, Max Homa, Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, Hideki Matsuyama, Collin Morikawa, and the winner of last weekend’s Travelers Championship, Keegan Bradley.
Detroit Golf Club
The field plays shorter on the PGA Tour standards standing on 7,370 yards and has produced equitable leaderboards of plodders and bombers. It was opened in 1899 and features two 18-hole courses designed by Donald Ross in 1913.
Who is the Favorite to win the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic?
No player has won the Rocket Mortgage Classic twice since its adoption as a PGA Tour event in 2019. With most elite players absent in preparation for the season’s final major championship, 2022 champion Tony Finau stands a perfect chance to become the first player to lift the title twice.
Finau is a 12-1 favourite to lift the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic ahead of Justin Thomas (14/1), Collin Morikawa (14/1), and Rickie Fowler (14/1). Another contender at the Detroit Golf Club, Max Homa, sits third on the FedEx Cup Standings and is an 18/1 longshot.
Rickie Fowler (14/1)
The five-time PGA Tour winner is having the best play of his career. Rickie has eight T5 finishes at the majors, including title contention at the U.S. Open two weeks ago and a Top-13 finish at the Travelers Championship last weekend.
Rickie Fowler is a strong contender for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Justin Thomas (14/1)
Justin endured a disappointing outing at the U.S. Open two weeks ago, missing the cut at the second-round 81. Most people had written him off after that, but he quickly picked himself up to finish a remarkable T9 at the Travelers Championship last week.
He moved from 78th to 66th in the FedEx Cup ranking in one week to qualify for the first playoff event. It’s hard to imagine him faltering again soon. The big comeback is why Justin appears in our top-5 contenders at the Detroit Golf Club this weekend.
Collin Morikawa (14/)
Collin will be searching for his first win since 2021 and had a great play at Connecticut last week. He missed two consecutive cuts at the Memorial and the U.S. Open but bounced back with a Top-9 finish at the Travelers Championship last week.
Max Homa (18/1)
Max has recorded two wins and eight T10 finishes this season but has four missed cuts in his last seven events, including two consecutive misses. He has played at Rocket Mortgage Classic thrice, making the cut in each outing and recording top-25 finishes in the last two. He can improve on the past and win this year’s edition.
Sungjae Im (18/1)
The last six outings have not been the best, for Im finishing below T29 in his last five, including three missed cuts. However, Im showed a remarkable revival at the Travelers Championship last week and is likely to post great results at Detroit, where he has T21 finishes in two of his last three starts, including a T8 in 2021.
Cam Davis (35/1)
Another longshot at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, Cam Davis tied at 33rd at Travelers last week after firing a final round 63. This was a great bounce-back from three straight missed cuts. Davis enjoys playing at Rocket Mortgage Classics, winning the 2021 edition and tied for 14th last year.
His off-the-tee this season has been excellent, ranking 9th in strokes gained, which gives him an edge going into this week.
